The City provides all regular full-time employees with basic term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefits at no cost to the employee. This coverage is through American United Life Insurance Company. The benefit is two times the annual salary, up to a maximum of $50,000. In addition, coverage is provided in the event of an accidental death equal to the amount of the basic term life insurance (sometimes called double indemnity). Coverage is also provided in the event of certain accidental injuries. The amount of coverage reduces starting at age 65, and every five years thereafter. This coverage is provided to you as long as you are a city employee. It terminates, however, when you leave employment or retire.
Supplemental Life Insurance
In addition to the employer-provided Life/AD&D insurance described above, employees are able to purchase additional life insurance protection for themselves and other members of their family. The employee may purchase supplemental term life insurance for themselves in increments of $10,000, with a minimum benefit of $10,000 and a maximum benefit of $100,000.
Supplemental life insurance is also available for an employee's spouse and/or minor children, but only if the employee purchases supplemental life insurance benefits for themselves as well. The spouse benefit is in increments of $5,000, up to 50% of the amount of supplemental life insurance purchased for the employee.
The benefit for children is a flat $10,000 for each child enrolled.
