Tips from the Information Technology Committee

Digital Television Update (2/09)

Recently Congress extended from February 17th to June 12th the deadline for broadcasters to begin transmitting all TV programming in a digital format.  While the mandated deadline has been extended, broadcasters may voluntarily make the switch to all digital prior to June 12th.

The transition has been widely advertised for many months but the change in dates and the fact that some stations will be switching to digital ahead of June 12th is bound to cause a great deal of confusion.

Residents who subscribe to either cable or satellite should not experience a problem with the transition.  Questions or problems should be directed to your cable or satellite provider. The number for Comcast is 301-499-2930 and for Verizon is 1-877-248-1875

For those who do not subscribe these services and are viewing TV on an older set with an antenna, action is required. In order to continue viewing TV on these sets, you will need to purchase a converter box.

For information about converter boxes or the converter box program, call the National Telecommunications and Information Agency (NTIA) at 1-888-DTV-2009 or visit them at www.dtv2009.gov.

To assist those having difficulty installing the converter boxes, staff at the Bowie Senior Center have been trained by members of the Information Technology Committee, to demonstrate how to install the new converter boxes.  Residents are welcome to visit the Center during regular Center hours and request a demonstration.

Residents with any other questions regarding the transition, should be directed to the FCC either at 1-888-CALL-FCC (voice); 1-888-TELL-FCC (TTY) or have them visit www.dtv.gov
