Filing for Office

Residents who are registered voters can file for elected office in the Office of the City Clerk. Please call the City Clerk at 301-809-3029 in advance to verify filing eligibility requirements and to arrange a filing date and time.

Candidates for elected office must fill out a Certificate of Nomination, a Nomination of Treasurer Form and submit a filing fee of $25. Appointment of a treasurer must be done at the time of filing for office. Candidates should bring the completed Nomination of Treasurer Form with them when they file for office. The Certificate of Nomination Form must be completed in person at the time of filing.

In accordance with Section 2-71b of the City Code, each candidate for elective public office shall file a statement of financial disclosure with the City Clerk prior to, or at the time of, filing for office. 

NOTE: No person may solicit or collect funds to be used in furtherance of the election to municipal office of any person who has not filed a Certificate of Candidacy and the Notice of Appointment of Treasurer.(City Code: Sec.6-68 (d)) 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MAYOR

Residents who have resided within the corporate limits of the City of Bowie for at least two (2) years, who are at least 18 years of age, and are registered voters, are eligible to file for the office of Mayor of the City of Bowie.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR COUNCIL

Residents who have resided within the corporate limits of the City of Bowie for at least one (1) year, who are at least 18 years of age, and are registered voters are eligible to file for the Council seat in the District in which they live.
