The City is committed to an Animal Control Program that will serve its residents as well as treat animals humanely. The Animal Control Office is empowered and required to enforce Chapter 4 of the Bowie City Code and to respond to calls for assistance within the geographic boundaries of the City of Bowie. All dogs, cats and ferrets residing within the Bowie City limits must be licensed and be kept on a leash when off the pet owner's property. Pets Running at Large

Nuisance Wildlife

Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary, located near Bowie, is the region's only shock-trauma hospital for sick, injured or orphaned wildlife. The Sanctuary is supported solely through donations. They offer these friendly suggestions:

You may discover small rabbits hopping around the yard or uncover a rabbit nest in the lawn - especially after mowing grass. Don't assume the babies are abandoned. The parents visit the nest usually at night. Please cover the nest with dry grass or other ground cover. Check the babies in the morning to see that they are warm and safe. The mother will not reject the babies because you have touched them.

You may also see baby birds who are unable to fly and who only run along the ground. This is part of the process of them learning how to fly. It is okay to leave them alone or place them in a nearby bush. If a partially feathered baby bird has fallen from its nest and you can safely return it to its nest, please do so. Parent birds will not reject the babies because you have touched them.

If you find an injured or orphaned wild animal, you can call City Hall or you can contact the Davidsonville Wildlife Sanctuary at 410-798-0193 for assistance.

The City provides assistance in removing wildlife located within the living space of your residence.

Nuisance wildlife not within the living space of your residence can be eliminated by means of exclusion. Call City Hall for details at 301-809-3002 or 301-262-6200, extension 3002. For more information regarding nuisance wildlife, see the University of Maryland, Maryland Cooperative Extension.
