The Department of Planning and Economic Development provides professional support through long-range special studies and recommendations on development proposals to the City Manager and the City Council.   The Department also promotes the economic development of the City by attracting new businesses to the area while supporting the retention of existing employers.

The Department provides analysis of land use, zoning, subdivision, annexation and design proposals for new developments in the City. Proposed changes in the transportation network and provision of water and sewer services are also analyzed. Department recommendations are reviewed by the Bowie Advisory Planning Board and the City Council. The Council's final position is then presented to the appropriate agency such as the Prince George's County Planning Board, Prince George's County Council, State Highway Administration, etc.

This Department's second and growing focus is to promote economic development of the City by attracting new businesses to the area while supporting the retention of existing employers. The Department also serves as a repository of information on business services and programs available in Prince George's County and the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area. Information and assistance made available to the public includes site selection and development, new business development, demographic and economic data, referral sources for financial assistance, business counseling, government procurement and business services. Numerous publications related to businesses are also made available.
