Parks and Recreational Facilities

Learn about plans for updating Allen Pond Park and Whitemarsh Park

Our parks are precious to us in the City of Bowie. We are proud of our open spaces and our recreational facilities. The City has been recognized nationally as a winner in Tree City and Plant City USA competitions.

The City of Bowie offers an extensive selection of park and recreational facilities for all ages, abilities and interests.  The City features over 1,100 acres of parkland and open space, including 22.5 miles of trails and 75 ballfields.  Bowie’s parks provide facilities for many activities including hiking, biking, fishing and canoeing, as well as sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds and picnic areas.

Allen Pond Park, one of Bowie’s main park facilities, hosts numerous events including open-air concerts, Fourth of July fireworks, and several community festivals.  In addition, it is home to Opportunity Park, which offers 100% accessible experiences at it tot lot, school-aged playground, fitness cluster and fishing pier.

Bowie is also home to three community centers, an ice arena, a skate park, a gymnasium, a playhouse, a senior center, and an 18-hole golf course.  Enjoy all the ways to play, relax, explore and recreate in the City of Bowie!

City of Bowie Geocaching Trail

The City of Bowie is proud to announce a new Bowie Geocaching Trail in our City parks.  The City of Bowie has partnered with the Maryland Geocaching Society and Geocaching.com  to offer a new trail activity for our citizens and park users.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching, simply put, is a high-tech treasure hunt using a handheld GPS unit.  Geocachers hide small “treasures” in containers (called “geocaches”) and record the coordinates of their caches on Geocaching.com for others to find.  They also post anything from helpful clues to sophisticated puzzles for others to decode in order to find the geocache.  The activity is all about hiding and seeking, not about the value of the hidden treasure.  You can get started today at Geocaching.com or view a You Tube video about geocaching.

Share Your Experience!

We hope you try this great new activity!  We encourage you to share your geocaching experience in Bowie parklands with other geocachers.  Find a cache and post reviews and photos, plus read and view the geocaching journeys of other enthusiasts like yourself at geocaching.com.

Guidelines and Application

Guidelines have been established to assure good stewardship of the natural and cultural resources in the parks.  Written permission from the City must be received prior to placement of any personal caches.

We look forward to seeing you geocaching in our City parks!
