11/16/2010 Update
On Monday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m. City staff and the City’s consultant, Lardner/Klein Landscape Architects, PC, presented the DRAFT Master Plan Concept to City Council.  The meeting was attended by several representatives from the various athletic programs who utilize Whitemarsh Park for their respective sports, members of the press and staff.

City Council and attending members offered several comments regarding the plan, but were very supportive of the plan as presented.

The final step in the preparation of the master plan will be to obtain public comment on the master plan concept.  On December 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room in City Hall, located at 2614 Kenhill Drive, Bowie, MD 20715, a presentation will be presented by staff and the Consultant.  The presentation will provide some background on the project and the steps that were taken throughout its preparation.  The public is encouraged to attend and offer comment of the plan.

5/5/2010 Update
On Tuesday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. a kick-off meeting was held at City Hall in room #204 (moved from Rm #111) for the preparation of a Whitemarsh Park Master Plan. 

In attendance were:  Elisabeth Lardner and Jacob Clark of Lardner/Klein Landscape Architects PC; Charlie Jacobs of the City’s Community Recreation Committee (CRC); Pete Cipolla, of Bowie Sport Fit; Jason Craddock and Fred Phipps of the Bowie Boys & Girls Club Football program; Ryan Metzbower (Park Management Intern); and the following City Staff: Sally Hein, Frank Stevens, Annette Esterheld, Nick Spurgeon, and Matt Reno (absent were Ed Hall and Alan Forney).

Representatives from the following athletic organizations were asked to participate on the steering committee and invited to attend the meeting, however were not in attendance:  BBGC Football Commissioner- Dwayne Grey; BBGC Lacrosse Commissioner- Gary Hahn; BBGC Baseball Commissioner- Joe Bechtel; St. Pius X CYO Baseball- Ray Smith; Grace Christian Baseball- Dan Servi; Bowie Kickball League- Mark Villee.

The Steering Committee plans to add to the committee a representative from the City’s Environmental Advisory Committee- (Representative to be determined at the May 5 EAC meeting)

The meeting included 1) introductions, 2) an overview of Scope of Services and milestones for the Master Plan, 3) brief discussion on needs and desires of attendees, 4) a brief discussion on best time to hold future meetings, and 5) a discussion on data needing to be provided to the Consultant.

Meeting attendees were asked to compile the below information and submit to City staff by May 19:

  1. Total participants in their respective athletic program
  2. Current number of teams in their respective athletic program
  3. Current number of participants on each team in their respective athletic program
  4. Estimated number of vehicles associated with each team on both practice and game days
  5. Number and practices and games held each week and timeframe for each
  6. Estimate of program size in 2015 and 2020, if capacity of park was not a limitation
  7. List of needs and desires for their respective athletic programs

The next meeting is expected to take place in early June (date, time, and location to be determined; however it looks like those in attendance prefer to meet in early morning or afternoon, rather than the evening, as this would conflict with practice schedules).

4/20/10 Update
On Tuesday May 4th at 7 p.m. a preliminary meeting of the Whitemarsh Park Master Plan Group will take place. Staff members involved in the project and stakeholders representing various park user groups will be invited to attend. Dates, times and locations for future group meetings and community meetings will be determined at that time.

4/1/10 Update
The City of Bowie is pleased to announce that Lardner/Klein Landscape Architects, PC has been retained as its consultant to work with the public and staff on the development of a master plan for Whitemarsh Park.  Currently staff is working on identifying staff members to be assigned to the Whitemarsh Park Master Plan Steering Committee who will work closely with the consultant throughout the development of the plan.
