City of Bowie Announces Two New Mortgage Assistance Programs For City Employees, Police Officers, and Teachers

The City of Bowie, Maryland has begun to accept applications for two new programs designed to help city employees, police officers, and teachers become homeowners in Bowie.

Bowie is collaborating with Prince George’s County Council and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Maryland Mortgage Program to offer these programs.

The ‘City Workforce’ program, for city employees, and the ‘Bowie First’ program, for police officers and teachers, will provide qualified applicants with $1,000 in assistance toward closing costs.  The Maryland Mortgage Program will provide matching funds, for a total of  $2,000 in assistance.

In the current economy climate it is important to make Bowie an affordable place to live for the City’s employees and police officers and teachers who choose to live in the City.  The City of Bowie depends on these members of the workforce in so many ways and it’s important for them to be part of the community. 

Already one of the largest municipalities in Maryland, Bowie is continuing to grow in size and diversity.  As the credit crisis places greater requirements on borrowers and economic conditions place added burdens on household budgets, it is very important that we find ways to ease the path to homeownership for members of the workforce.

Qualified employees who are purchasing their first home in Bowie may soon pick up an application packet at the Bowie City Hall at 2614 Kenhill Drive in the City Manager’s Office or download the application from www.cityofbowie.org.  Interested employees are encouraged to begin their applications soon as the funds will be awarded on a first come-first serve basis.
