Kenilworth Elementary School Teacher Lynn Marano
Selected as March Teacher of the Month

Ms. Marano teaches second grade reading and language arts. She is a knowledgeable and creative teacher who provides her students with a stimulating ahs supportive program. In the “Literacy Circles” in her classroom, she provides a variety of creative experiences in which the students to engage in sharing their experiences with the stories they are reading, often using props, costumes and interactive activities, in addition to learning new words. Fifth grade students at the school assist with the second graders’ groups discussions.

Ms. Marano was nominated for Teacher of the Month recognition by the school’s Teacher Awards Committee. They describe many fascinating centers in the classroom, where students are able to complete projects by following instructions for the use of materials provided. These may be making a bird feeder, or a reindeer, or writing a letter to a friend or sitting and reading with a friend. She encourages family members to be “secret readers,” who come to school to read with students, who “wait expectantly to see who will come in to read the next time!"

Ms. Marano, according to Principal Chris Mills, “routinely goes above and beyond the curriculum to challenge her students and create engaging and enriching lessons.” She is also a “Master Teacher,” who has” mentored several interns who have successfully earned their BSA’s in education and entered the teaching field.”

Ms. Marano will be recognized by the Bowie City Council, at the City Council meeting on April 19th. She will receive a certificate, a $100 U S Savings Bond, provided by funds from program partner BB&T Bank, and a very special lunch with her principal, Mr. Chris Mills, provided by Main Street Caterers.

The Teacher of the Month program recognizes Bowie teachers for their teaching excellence, as well as for the “little things” which mean a lot to students, parents, and peers.  Nomination information is available on the City of Bowie web site, www.cityofbowie.org (under Government/City Committees/Education Committee), at eligible schools*or at the Department of Community Services at Bowie City Hall.
