August is a time to look for indoor places where it’s cool so consider spending some time at Bowie City Hall, 2614 Kenhill Drive, and visit the City’s Art Galleries. Two long term galleries, run by the City’s Arts Committee, include a Visions of Bowie Gallery that includes photos and paintings of familiar Bowie scenes and a Conference Room Gallery that houses work by many local artists.

Two galleries rotate monthly, the City Hall Gallery, and the Young Person’s Art Gallery. This month’s City Hall Gallery features the work of Teresa Cowley, who works primarily in oils.  She enjoys learning people’s stories, which she then translates into memorable portraits that are as far-ranging as an old man in the Alps to a clown in San Antonio. Her oils of flowers, particularly roses, spill off the canvas.

The August Young Person’s Gallery features the winners from the 2010 Photo Contest who were honored at a reception on August 2. Mayor Fred Robinson gave out the certificates and congratulated the young artists.

The Photo Contest, sponsored by the City’s Arts Committee, had as its theme “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” and the photos cross the country from the beaches of Maryland to the Lower Falls at Yellowstone National Park.
