From beautiful watercolor flowers to children’s art interpretations of a Georgia O’Keefe flower, the walls of two City Hall Art galleries are alive with color. The watercolor flowers are just one example of art by the City’s December Artist of the month Jean Magram. Her work is featured in the City Hall Art Gallery and besides watercolors includes acrylic and mixed media artwork. Striking colors, interesting textures and linear elements directing the viewer’s eye are key elements of Magram’s work.

Magram has always had a passion for art and began her art lessons at the Corcoran School of Arts in Washington, D.C., at the age of 6. She won numerous prizes that included several scholarships. Besides creating her own work, Magram has been teaching watercolor painting classes at the Bowie Senior Center since 2002 and children’s art classes at Temple Solel since 1999... She is a founding member of the Guild of Bowie Artists that was established in 1982.

Besides Georgia O’Keefe flowers, the Young Person’s Art Gallery for December features schools of fish, cityscapes and colorful mandelas. The exhibiting school is Yorktown Elementary and the art teacher is Reshada Pullen.

The two exhibits will be on display until the end of December. The Young Person’s Art Gallery, which is a joint effort of the City’s Arts and Education Committees, features students’ artwork, The Young Person’s Art Gallery is located in the entrance foyer to Bowie City Hall, 2614 Kenhill Drive, and the City Hall Art Gallery that features Magram’s work is located along the hallways of the building.

The galleries, along with the City’s other two galleries, the Visions of Bowie Gallery and the Conference Room Gallery, are open during City Hall hours, 8:30 a.m.  to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday.
