New Exhibit About Thoroughbred Gallant Fox at Belair Stable

In 1930, one of the most important Thoroughbred race horses of the 20th Century, Gallant Fox, captured racing’s Triple Crown.  Bred and owned by William Woodward, owner of the Belair Stud, Gallant Fox called the Belair Stable home.  Woodward recognized, from the colt’s earliest days, he wasn’t “just a horse,” but a racehorse with incredible potential.  Retired at the end of his 1930 season, he had set a single season earnings record ($308,275) that stood for sixteen years, and earned the greatest lifetime earnings of any Thoroughbred to that time ($328,165).

A legend in his own right, Gallant Fox went on to sire another Triple Crown winner, Omaha, who took the crown in 1935.  They remain, to this day,  the only father-son Thoroughbreds to ever capture the Triple Crown.

In honor of the 80th anniversary of Gallant Fox’s accomplishment, the City of Bowie Museums Division is  pleased to announce a new, permanent exhibit on “The Fox of Belair” at the Belair Stable Museum.  Plan a visit to the Stable Museum and discover this important figure in Bowie’s “equine history.”

Belair Stable, at 2835 Belair Drive in Bowie, is open Tuesday through Sunday from Noon – 4:00 p.m.  Admission is free.  For further information, please call 301-809-3089 or email:   museumevents@cityofbowie.org
