Bowie Police Safe Speed Program To Begin April 19th
With Speed Camera Enforcement Near Northview Elementary School
On April 19th, the Bowie Police Department will kick off its Safe Speed Program with the use of the City’s first speed cameras in the vicinity of Northview Elementary School on Northview Drive. The purpose of the Safe Speed Program is to change the behavior of drivers in the City of Bowie and gain compliance with existing speed limits. The Safe Speed Program is another component of the Bowie Police Department’s overall traffic safety strategy.
The City Council approved an Ordinance in October 2009 allowing the use of speed cameras in school zones. The City Ordinance followed a change in State law, which expanded the use of speed cameras in work zones and school zones statewide.
The cameras in Bowie will be used exclusively in marked school zones between the hours of 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Safe Speed Program areas will be clearly delineated by signage. The cameras will be triggered for cars going 12 MPH over the posted speed limit. Citations will be issued to the owner of the vehicle. The citation carries a fine of $40 and does not carry points or affect the vehicle owner’s driving record. During a 30-day period beginning April 19th, only warning citations will be issued. This warning period will allow drivers to change their driving behavior before the regular citations are issued.
The Northview Elementary area, near 3700 Northview Drive will be the first school speed camera enforcement zone in the City. Other school zones will be announced in the coming months.
For questions or more information about this program, please contact the Bowie Police Department at 301-575-2480 or visit the Police Department page on the City website.
