The City of Bowie’s Arts Committee selects artists for the City Hall Art Gallery, a monthly display featuring local Bowie artists. This month there’s a twist because the featured artist is actually three visual artists, who are members of the Arts Committee. The three are Margaret Suddeth, Nichelle Fullen and George Tuggle.
Suddeth is a portrait artist who has been creating art “for as long as I can remember.” For over 30 years, watercolor has been her favorite medium. She discovered an affinity for painting portraits when her first child was born and she tied to capture the special moments of his childhood. Suddeth believes portraits have an emotional connection to the viewer other paintings don’t have. She is the co-chairman of the Arts Committee.
Fullen is a photographer who focuses on abstract and landscape photography. For her, abstract photography is a powerful tool of evocation and creative expression. Her landscape work is her effort to bear witness to the beauty and majesty of earth and share the joy she finds there. She, like Suddeth, has been a visual artist for almost 30 years of her life. The current show includes several pieces of her “Reflections” series. The full series, comprised of 21 images, shows different seasons at the eight-acre lake at Governor Bridge Natural Area.
Tuggle has spent most of his professional career in the area of commercial art/editorial illustration – interpreting and translating someone else’s thoughts or words into a visual form. With his own art, his desire is to change the way the viewer experiences everyday things by playing with the light source and altering the perspectives and points of view. He may paint up close, from above or below the subject matter. His focus is on energy and he uses texture and color to bring out the energy of what he paints.
