SUBJECT: Public Safety Committee’s Recommendation for a Traffic Safety Study

The Public Safety Committee is suggesting a consultant study which they describe
as a “comprehensive, network level, professional traffic study, addressing
motor vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.” Staff has not had
an opportunity to address the substantive aspects of the Committee recommendation.
I did have a telephone conversation this afternoon with Mayor Robinson, who
contacted me after receiving the Committee’s recommendation via email.
Again, without addressing the merits of the recommendation, the Mayor and
I had the same reaction. The concern that we have relates to the timing of
this proposal, given the Committee’s request for the Council to act
now. This proposal ought to be reviewed by City Council within the framework
of the review of the FY 2010 Proposed Budget.
