PROCLAMATION
OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITYOF BOWIE, MARYLAND
RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 2009 AS “BLACK HISTORY MONTH”

          WHEREAS, in 1926, Carter G. Woodson, the child of slave parents, established “Negro History Week” to celebrate and study the accomplishments of black Americans; and

          WHEREAS, this event evolved into Black History Month in the United States, a month-long recognition each February, of the many and diverse contributions to our country, of African Americans; and

          WHEREAS, as Carter G. Woodson valued education and believed that it was never too late to learn, it is beneficial for all Americans to continue to learn about the heritage and the experiences of all Americans; and
 
          WHEREAS, it is through learning that we are enlightened and come to understand each other more clearly.

          NOW, THEREFORE be it proclaimed that the City Council of Bowie does recognize February 2009 as “Black History Month” in the City of Bowie.

          INTRODUCED AND PASSED at a regular meeting on this 17th day of February, 2009.
