MEMORANDUM
TO: City Council
FROM: David J. Deutsch, City Manager
DATE: March 11, 2010
SUBJECT: Proposed Award of a City Contract to EKE, LLC, for the design, fabrication and installation of a kinetic sculpture (otherwise known as mobile) for the new City Hall.
The City Council asked the Arts Committee to set up a Public Art process to provide public art pieces for the new City Hall. The Public Art Selection Panel, a subcommittee of the Arts Committee, decided that one of the pieces would be a kinetic sculpture (otherwise known as a mobile).
After a Public Art Policy was developed and approved by the City Council, the Panel issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) nationwide for a kinetic artist to design, fabricate and install a kinetic sculpture. Three finalists were selected and then interviewed on January 20, 2010. The Panel chose the design submitted by EKE, LLC, of Philadelphia, PA. Then on February 1, the City Council approved the design submitted by EKE, LLC.
Recommendation: Staff recommends that the contract for the design, fabrication and installation of a kinetic sculpture be awarded to EKE, LLC, in the amount of $80,000, and that R- 17-10 be approved.
