MEMORANDUM
TO: City Council
FROM: David J. Deutsch, City Manager
DATE: April 1, 2010
SUBJECT: Proposed Award of a City Contract to Gino Schiavone for the design, fabrication and installation of a monumental sundial for the new City Hall.
The City Council asked the Arts Committee to set up a Public Art process to provide public art pieces for the new City Hall. The Public Art Selection Panel, a subcommittee of the Arts Committee, decided that one of the pieces would be a monumental sundial that would be located in the front plaza of the new City Hall.
After a Public Art Policy was developed and approved by the City Council, the Panel issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) nationwide for a sundial artist to design, fabricate and install a monumental sundial. Three finalists were selected and then interviewed on January 20, 2010. The Panel chose the design submitted by Gino Schiavone of Taos, NM. On February 1, the City Council approved the design submitted by Gino Schiavone.
Recommendation: Staff recommends that the contract for the design, fabrication and installation of a monumental sundial be awarded to Gino Schiavone, in the amount of $90,000 and that R-21-10 be approved.
