P R O C L A M A T I O N

OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BOWIE, MARYLAND
   PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY, 2010
 "POPPY MONTH" IN BOWIE

WHEREAS, America is the land of freedom, preserved and protected willingly and freely by citizen soldiers and millions who have answered the call to arms have died on the field of battle; and

          WHEREAS, our nation must constantly be reminded of the price of war and the debt owed to those who have died in war and the red poppy has been designated as a symbol of sacrifice of lives in all wars; and

          WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary has pledged to remind America annually of this debt through the distribution of the memorial flower; and

          WHEREAS, the American Legion, Disney-Bell Post #66 will honor the winners of the "What Is My Patriotic Role as a U.S. Citizen?" essay contest, Junior Color Guard, 2009-2010 Miss Poppy, Cub Scouts and the newly named 2009 Maryland Girls State representative, and acknowledging that the four girls selected will represent the American Legion Auxiliary at the Maryland Girls State at Salisbury University this summer, a week of learning about city, county and state governments..

          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Council of the City of Bowie, Maryland does hereby proclaim the month of May, 2010 as "Poppy Month" and ask that all citizens pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing the Memorial Poppy during this month; and

          BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED that the Council of the City of Bowie, Maryland recognizes and congratulates the essay winners, the Junior Color Guard, Miss Poppy, and the Cub Scouts, for their outstanding accomplishments.

          INTRODUCED AND PASSED by the Council of the City of Bowie, Maryland at a Regular Meeting on April 19, 2010 and Presented on this 23rd day of April, 2010.
