Status Report

1. Prince George's County Landscape Plans

Attached is a staff memo and proposed landscape plans prepared by Prince George’s County for Old Chapel Road, Race Track Road and Mitchellville Road.  This proposed planting is to help partially offset the impact of the tree removal and trimming that took place by BGE as part of the Bowie Electric Reliability Action Plan along these County right-of-ways.  After the staff review and discussions with Prince George’s County and BGE, staff intends to authorize the County to proceed with implementation.  Please let us know if you have any comments or questions.

2. False Alarm Calls in Bowie

In response to Council’s question about false alarm calls, there were 997 residential and commercial false alarm calls in all of 2009, out of 27,589 calls for service.

3.  2010 Census Outreach

As Council is aware, staff has been working with members of the Community Outreach Committee (COC) to promote the 2010 Census in Bowie.  An event for businesses and community organizations was held on February 20th at City Hall.  A recording of the event is now being shown on the City's cable TV channel, along with some other Census outreach segments.  Staff has distributed many posters and information packets to businesses around town, and the COC is preparing to host an information table at the Bowie Town Center Food Court this Saturday, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  Also this weekend, the COC will be posting reminder signage (with the slogan "Bowie Counts on You") throughout the City.  A media campaign is underway using City communication venues including marquee signage, the City website, the Alert Bowie system, letters to the editor of the two Bowie newspapers and the cable TV channel.  Council's passage of Proclamation P-4-10 at your meeting last Monday night designated this Saturday as "Census Awareness Day" in Bowie and is part of the overall effort to increase the participation rate in the 2010 Census.
