SUBJECT: Status Report/Council Poll

Status Report
1. Annual Health Fair
The Bowie Health Center's Annual Health Fair is scheduled for September 25th. This year, both the Senior Center and the Gymnasium will be among the host sites for the Fair, and City staff from both facilities are serving on the planning committee for the event. We will also be assisting with publicity by using some of our regular communications methods to help spread the word about the types of screenings and other services that will be available at the Health Fair.
2. Fiber Optic Cable Connection
Beginning on or around July 6, 2010, contractors for Prince George’s County will be installing a fiber optic cable connection from the Communications Tower located on the M-NCPPC property on Route 3 to Bowie City Hall. The project will include installing the cable in the City’s right-of-way from the Tower, down the south side of Belair Drive to Kenhill Drive, and along the west side of Kenhill to City Hall. A second contractor will connect the fiber from the Communications Tower to the new County 911 Center located on the Melford property.
A letter to residents impacted by the construction will be mailed out this week and a door hanger will be delivered to each home just prior to the start date. The project should take approximately six weeks to complete.
3. Streetlight Maintenance
This subject has been scheduled for the July 12th City Council Worksession. Many of the issues which Council raised earlier this week were addressed in a report prepared by the Public Works Director and distributed to Council with the February 4, 2010 Agenda package. I know that Council receives a lot of material and you may not have had the opportunity to focus on this report when it was first sent to you. We will build on this report in preparation for the discussion on July 12th.
Please contact me if you have any comments on this material or any other issues in advance of the upcoming Worksession.
4. Home Energy Audits
Please review the enclosed packet of material regarding this program.
5. Speed Signs
The speed signs have been out on Dunwood Valley Drive, Nottinghill Drive and Whispering Leaves Lane since March 19th. We plan to relocate them next week to Pennsbury Drive, Tulip Grove Drive and Chapel Forge Drive.
6. Economic Development Committee (EDC) July 2010 Meeting Date Change
The EDC will meet on Wednesday, July 21st at 7:30 a.m. in Room 204. This is a one time change to the regular meeting schedule. An agenda and meeting packet will be distributed the week of July 12.
7. Bowie Hosts Successful Marketing Event
The City's Economic Development office, in partnership with St. John Properties, hosted the fourth Bowie Broker Trap Shoot and second Bowie Brokerage Challenge. The event, held Friday, June 18th at the Prince George's Trap and Skeet Center, brought together 66 commercial real estate brokers from across the region to hear an update about commercial real estate in Bowie and to network while trap shooting. Mayor Robinson presented 15 individual awards during lunch. This year's Bowie Brokerage Challenge winner is the Ezra Company; they received an award for their office and their company name will be engraved on a permanently displayed trophy plaque.
