Speed Awareness Program
The City currently has a
Speed Awareness Program in place to reduce the vehicular speeds at which people
drive on City streets. The program components include:
1. Speed Enforcement - The City’s six Contract Police Officers
devote 20% of their time to radar enforcement within the City. Each Contract
Police car is equipped with a radar unit supplied by the City. The City has
two traffic counters that provide extensive objective information concerning
the extent of speeding on City streets. This information is then used to direct
contract officers’ activity.
2. Radar Display Trailer - The City has two digital radar display
trailers which indicate a passing motorist’s speed. These units are placed on
a different City street each weekday. On a random weekly basis, a Contract Officer
will write tickets to speeders passing the unit. The trailer is designed to
make motorists more aware of their driving speed, and hopefully to encourage
them to consistently slow down.
3. Signage - The City has installed large blue signs at major
entrances to the City, warning drivers to reduce speed and advising them that
speeders will be prosecuted. These signs are installed in areas where motorists
are making the transition from a highway, where speed limits are higher, to
residential streets where the speed limit is 25- 30 miles per hour.
4. State and County Police - The City is working with the State
and County Police to provide additional aggressive speed enforcement by these
police agencies within the City.
Please contact Alan Creveling, Emergency Management Resources Coordinator at
301- 809-3079 or at
acreveling@cityofbowie.org to
request radar speed enforcement by a CityPolice Officer, have the radar display
unit located on your street, or have an objective traffic analysis done on
your street using the traffic counters.
