MEMORANDUM
TO: City Council
FROM: David J. Deutsch, City Manager
SUBJECT: Recycling Task Force
DATE: November 28, 2006
The City had a Recycling Task Force over a decade ago. Since that time, the
recycling program has expanded to include plastic, junk mail and cardboard.
In addition, the City instituted curbside vacuum leaf collection.
Mr. Michael Bottega, a Buckingham resident, has issued a call for a new Recycling Task Force. Staff supports the idea and would recommend Council endorse the creation of a volunteer Recycling Task Force. The focus of the Task Force would be community education with a specific goal of increasing our City’s 24% recycling rate.
It is further recommended that, following the precedent of earlier task forces, staff be authorized to assemble a diverse group of approximately a dozen City residents who are willing to engage in this issue. The Public Works Director will be the staff liaison. It is expected that a Task Force assembled no later than sometime in January 2007 could complete its work, with a report and presentation to Council by the July 9, 2007 Council Worksession.
