MEMORANDUM

TO: City Council

FROM: David J. Deutsch, City Manager

SUBJECT: Community Shred Day

DATE: April 17, 2008

Last fall, we had a Household Hazardous Waste Day at the Prince George’s Stadium parking lot. Part of that event included a contract supplied document shredder. This was well received and there have been resident requests since that event to hold a separate event for shredding. In addition, Mayor Robinson and Councilmember Brady have received resident inquiries.

Public Works has received prices from the two firms that Prince George’s County uses for their contract shredding. The low price of $125 per hour was provided by 2PI Shredding and Recycling Services out of Washington, D.C. We propose to hold this event on Saturday, May 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Bowie High School parking lot. Permission to use the lot has been obtained from Principal Spence. All shredded documents will be recycled. The cost to the City would be $750. However, PNC Bank has offered to cosponsor this event and will contribute half of this cost. They will provide employees on site. Public Works will also have two to three employees to assist residents. We will advertise this event widely to assure good participation.

Recommendation

Approve proposed Community Shred Day on May 17, 2008 as described above.
