Governmental agencies have tremendous
ability to influence the way people live their lives and conduct
their businesses. By demonstrating that responsible land use
through sustainable design and Green construction has both environmental
and economic benefits, governing bodies offer visible examples
of how feasible and reasonable it is to make the transition from
standard development practices to sustainable development, and
serve to bring alternative technologies into the public eye.
Greening Federal, State, County and municipal facilities maximizes
tax dollars by minimizing utility costs. Sustainable development
simultaneously protects and improves environmental resources.
Green
initiatives reflect a commitment to make government work better
and cost less. Governments
have enormous purchasing power that can
be and should be used to stimulate markets for U.S. energy and environmental
technologies. Green initiatives save taxpayers money through reduced
material costs, waste disposal costs, and utility bills. Green measures
already implemented at the White House to reduce energy costs have
saved a total $182,000 per year, with more savings to come. The City
of Bowie alone spends approximately one million dollars annually
on energy. Obviously, if costs AND resource consumption are minimized,
the City will benefit from greening its facilities, and methods of
operation. Going "Green" will prove to be a win-win situation.
