The recycling chart is a handy reminder of what can and cannot be recycled.

  • Recycling is collected once weekly.
  • All items for recycling can go in a single container - there is no longer a need to sort recycling.
  • Place recycling container at curbside no later than 7 a.m. on your scheduled recycling day.

Recycling Containers
The City has distributed large, wheeled recycling carts to all City neighborhoods. You may use the carts, the smaller blue recycling bins or any container marked "Recycle". The wheeled carts cannot be used for trash or yard waste. Contact Public Works at 301-809-2344, with any questions.

Recycling Makes a Difference
In 2012, City residents recycled a total of 9,822 tons.  This resulted in over $550,032 of savings in landfill costs, while also helping our environment.

Yearly recycling tonnage will be posted here each year so residents can see the results of their efforts.

Yard Waste
Yard waste is collected throughout the City every Wednesday and must be at the curb by 7 a.m. Branches must be no larger than 3 inches in diameter or longer than 4 feet and must be tied securely or placed in a container or paper bag.
Cans should weigh no more than 50 pounds when filled.

Larger limbs should be stacked at the curb. They must be cut into 18-24 inch long sections and must be no greater than 24 inches in diameter and weigh no more than 50 pounds each.

Please remember that yard waste cannot be included with your regular trash. Yard waste is not allowed in Maryland landfills and including it could cause an entire truck load of trash to be rejected.

Effective January 1, 2014, no yard waste may be put in plastic bags.

Yard waste must be placed in containers or put out in large heavy duty paper bags. These bags may be purchased at BJ's, Giant, Home Depot, Lowes, Safeway, Walmart and other local stores.

Acceptable Yard Waste Items:

  • Bagged grass
  • Leaves
  • Twigs
  • Branches - must be tied securely in bundles
  • Christmas trees (January only). Trees must be placed at the curb and be free of decorations and lights.

Unacceptable Yard Waste Items:

  • Bamboo
  • Dirt
  • Rocks
  • Stumps
  • Apples
  • Mulch
  • Pumpkins
  • 2 x4s
  • Landscape Timbers

To dispose of the items above that the City does not take, you may call Prince George's County Brown Station Landfill at 301-952-7630 for information on how to dispose of these items at their facility.
