Subject: February 2008 Teacher of the Month
Adrienne Harris, Kenilworth Elementary School

The person selected as Teacher of the Month for February, is referred to as a “phenomenal educator,” in her nomination. Adrienne Harris, a Kindergarten teacher at Kenilworth Elementary School was nominated by a parent, Mrs. Denise Lucas, who wondered if she could do her justice, in her description.

Ms. Harris calls her students her “sweethearts,” and asks that they to bring a hug and a smile to school every day, where they are greeted with a hug by their teacher every morning. She takes a genuine interest in how her “sweethearts” are doing. Students treat her like a “rock star,” lining up to greet and hug her wherever she goes!

Students are allowed to “take ownership of their successes,” yet, this teacher gently guides them where improvement is needed. She makes sure that she has all available resources for her students, devising materials and innumerable handouts which are made available for parents to assist students in their endeavors. Word play and poetry reading are incorporated not only in the classroom, but also in information sent home, so that parents are also involved, and gain insight into “fun and playful ways to engage in word play” with their children at home. She makes parents feel “involved in their children’s success,” offering “positive feedback,” and “gentle,” “constructive” criticism.

This teacher “exemplifies what teaching should be about.”

Principal Chris Mills reacted to finding about Ms. Harris’ selections by stating that “Adrienne is the epitome of excellence in education.” “Working with her for the past 4 ½ years has made me a better teacher and a better principal.”

Bowie City Council will recognize Ms. Adrienne Harris as Teacher of the Month at the City Council Meeting on February 19th at 8pm. She will receive a certificate of recognition and a $100 United States Savings Bond, for which funding is provided by program partner, the BB& T Bank. Main Street Caterers will treat her and Principal Chris Mills with a “lunch box,” for a special lunch together. .

The Teacher of the Month program recognizes Bowie teachers for their teaching excellence,
as well as for the “little things” which mean a lot to students, parents, and peers. Nomination information is available on the City of Bowie web site, www.cityofbowie.org, or at the Department of Community Services at Bowie City Hall.
