Recent events have reminded us all of the importance of preparing our homes and our families for the unexpected. The American Red Cross has initiated a program called “Together We Prepare” which recommends five simple steps, which you can take to prepare for emergencies. The steps are to make a plan, build a disaster kit, get first aid and CPR training, volunteer to help, and give blood so that there are adequate supplies in the event of an emergency. Following this advice will help you in any emergency situation from fire, to hurricane, to national emergency.

This information has been gathered from Federal Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross and Prince George’s County Government publications and websites. It is the most current information available at this time. However, please note that the Federal Government and other agencies continue to refine the emergency preparedness advice being given to residents. For the most up-to-date information, contact the City of Bowie or visit the websites listed at the end of this article.

In case of an emergency, Bowie residents should follow the instructions of the Prince George’s County Government

Weather Radio Saves Lives

Weather Radio, a feature of the National Weather Service, provides round-the-clock broadcasts of weather forecasts, current conditions, and severe weather watches and warnings.

NOAA Weather Radio is one of the quickest and most reliable ways to get important weather information. Depending on the radio model, emergency alerts can be limited to the immediate area only and can activate even when the audio on the radio has been turned off. For more information about purchasing one of these radios, visit the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov/nwr/faq.htm
