Chief Katherine Perez will be sworn in as the first chief of the Bowie Police Department at a ceremony on Monday, September 18, 2006. Mayor G. Frederick Robinson will administer the Oath of Office before Chief Perez’ friends, family, and fellow municipal police chiefs during the City Council meeting. Bowie resident Katherine Perez was tapped to head the new Bowie Police Department after a nation-wide search. Chief Perez is the former chief of the District Heights Police Department. Prior to that she worked for 20 years as an officer in the Hartford, Connecticut Police Department. Most recently she was appointed by Governor Ehrlich to serve as Juvenile Justice Monitor for the state of Maryland. Chief Perez is the first employee of the new department, which will eventually grow to more than fifty officers. She began working on September 11th and is enthusiastically beginning to shape the fledgling department. She says that it is an “awesome challenge, but I’m excited and ready to get to work.” The swearing-in ceremony takes place on Monday, September 18th in the Council Chambers at 8 p.m. Prior to the ceremony there will be a small, informal reception for the chief in the multipurpose room at City Hall.
