2008 Arts Grants Winners Selected - City of Bowie Arts Grants Awarded to Three Art Projects

The City of Bowie Arts Grants are awarded to individuals and/or groups who plan to provide arts experiences for Bowie residents. This year applications were received from a number of individuals and groups seeking funding for a wide variety of projects. After reviewing, scoring and discussing the applications, the Arts Committee has decided to award grant funding to three projects this year. The total amount of the grant funding is $3,500.

Grant recipients are:

  • Yorktown Elementary School Rainforest Music and Dance Experience with Slim Harrison. Their grant is being partially funded with $1,375.This project involves an artist in residence, and includes a concert, workshops involving student use of a variety of instruments native to the Rainforest areas of the world. The conclusion for this arts experience will be an evening celebration of dances and instrumental music performed by students, to which community members will be invited.
  • The Prince George’s Philharmonic celebrated their 40th season performing concerts in the area, in 2006. They will receive a grant of $750. Their plan is to hold a concert at the Bowie Center for Performing Arts, offering a concert at a reasonable cost (no cost for children), which includes county high school students as instrumental and choral music performers.
  • Yorktown Elementary school’s Multi-Cultural Community Event involves two evening events to celebrate this “diverse community,” this winter/spring. Their grant is being partially funded with $1,375. Community Members will be invited to join them for two programs:
    • The Washington Chu Shan Chinese Opera
    • Andrea Manta (Music of the Andes) Instruments of South America and sounds of the rainforest.
