City Hall Art Gallery exhibit features artwork by Barbara Brisso for the month of September. Barbara paints with acrylics, watercolors, pen and ink, colored pencils and enjoys working with collages, into which she incorporates many mediums including handmade paper and photographs.

Although Barbara had no formal art training as a youngster, she has been interested in art since her teen years. As a young adult she painted what she saw and surprised herself when she realized that her works “were not too bad.” After about twenty-five years she began to attend art workshops, where she began her “golden years of art.”

Since moving to Bowie she has participated in many art classes through the SAGE program of Prince George’s Community College. These have taught her “not only to see nature but to feel it,” and to put her feelings into her artwork. Regardless of whether a painting is impressionistic, abstract or realistic, her work has “light and a feeling of spirituality.” She feels that it is not only what the artist feels that is expressed in paintings, but also that the viewers must be able to sense it.

Barbara is currently a member of the Guild of Bowie Artists, Laurel Art Guild and the Hyattsville Community Arts Alliance. She has exhibited her work locally in Bowie, as well as in Annapolis, Laurel Regional Hospital, Kentlands, Hyattsville Community Center, Franklin’s, and Mattawoman Creek Art Center in Charles County. In October she will be exhibiting in Riverdale with MNCPPC.

The City of Bowie Arts Committee is pleased to provide local artists with an opportunity to display and sell their artwork in the City Hall Art Galleries. The Galleries are located at Bowie City Hall, 2614 Kenhill Drive, Bowie, Maryland and are open weekdays from 8:30 AM –10 PM and on Saturdays, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
