Employment & Employability Training Pilot

On September 8, 2016, City Council authorized the Office of Grant Development &
Administration (Grants Office) in the City Manager's Office to create a pilot project in
the Old Town Bowie/Huntington Community to examine strategies that would serve as a
study of effective methods to increase the employability and stability of families in the

The Grants Office investigated an approach and has assembled a group of
organizations to implement a program which included a set of employment and life skills
training services, plus assessments related to behavioral and social service status and
needs, for the 15 -25 year old population in OTB. This comprehensive approach was
crafted to look at the whole family to determine what services are needed to provide an
environment conducive to an elevated quality life for the family and the community.

A complete report of the program, including the curriculum, can be viewed here.

On January 19, 2016 the Grants Office held its first class at the Huntington Center
implementing the Workforce and Life Skills Development & Training Program.
The program has successfully graduating ten (10) participants who attended classes one
day per week for six weeks. These classes covered:

Career Planning & Development
How to Be An Indispensable Employee
Quality Customer Service
Conflict Management
Workplace Communications
Financial Literacy

The program was a great opportunity for high school students and youth, ages 15 to 19, to
qualify for the 2016 Youth@Work/Summer Youth Employment Program offered by
Prince George's County.

The training covered the essential employability skills necessary - resume writing, interview
techniques, and customer service skills - to booster
their prospects and preparedness for
participating in the Youth@Work Program. The
students received a special certificate which
enables them to enter the County's summer
youth program without additional entry-level training.

Adult applicants, employed either part-time, full-time, unemployed, or under-employed,
developed leadership skills and received assistance with long-term career planning.
Additionally, all of these participants were given the opportunity to apply for jobs currently
available in the City at a local shopping center.
