Visit the Bowie Playhouse

The Bowie Playhouse, was originally known as "Theater in the Woods" when it was established in the 1970s. Today it is home to resident theater companies.

With these outstanding companies the Bowie Playhouse maintains a busy schedule when it is not shuttered due to COVID. Generally, as one show closes, another moves in. Most shows run three weeks, but musicals have a longer run keeping the Playhouse open weekends all year long. The Bowie Playhouse is located in Whitemarsh Park off of MD Rt. 3 in Bowie, MD.

The intimate 150-seat theater has state-of-the-art lighting, sound, and fly systems run by a very talented and dedicated professional theater crew.

The Playhouse generally provides a year-round production schedule using "in-residence" productions companies Bowie Community Theatre and 2nd Star Productions.  These production companies provide a wide range of shows including musicals, British mysteries, slapstick comedy, and drama. Many of the productions put on by these companies over the years have received various Ruby Griffith Awards including:
  • All Around Production Excellence - Ragtime (2019); Guys & Dolls (2016); Hello Dolly! (2014); Someone Who'll Watch Over Me (1998)
  • Outstanding Achievement (Musical) - H.M.S Pinafore (2017); Man of La Mancha (2010)
  • Outstanding Achievement (Play) -  To Kill a Mockingbird (2002); Steel Magnolias (1997)
