During an emergency communication is vital. When disaster strikes, be sure that you are able to both receive alerts/ notifications from emergency agencies as well as contact family, emergency services and utility companies. Develop your own communication plan that includes personal numbers such as daycare, school and doctors. Share this plan with your family members.

Emergency Communication Plan

Develop an emergency communication for your family and yourself. This plan will help you keep in contact in an emergency situation where there may be limited phone or internet capabilities. 

What to Include: 

  • Household Information - Write down phone numbers and email addresses. Having a piece of paper is important in the event you have no battery, internet or lose your phone.
  • School, Childcare, Caregiver and Workplace Emergency Plans - During an emergency it is important to know who will be picking up the children and that your children know who to expect as well. Phone calls may be difficult to connect, so know ahead of time.
  • Out-of-Town Contact - Identify someone outside your community or state who can act as a central point to help your household reconnect. In a disaster, it may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than call across town.
  • Emergency Meeting Places- Pick as safe, familiar place where your family can go to reunite or shelter. Keep pets in mind when deciding where to go.
    • Indoor - In the event of a tornado, hurricane or high wind, designate a small, interior, windowless room on the lowest level of the building.
    • In your neighborhood - If a fire or other emergency drives you from your home, designate a spot to meet and take accountability for everyone. This could be a stop sign, driveway or other easy to remember spot. 
    • Outside your neighborhood - If a disaster happens when you are not at home, think tornado or flash flood, pick a location that your family can reunite. This could be a library, community center, house of worship, or family friend's home.
    • Outside the city - If you cannot get home or to your out-of-neighborhood place or your family is not together and instructed to evacuate, choose a location that is further out such as the home of family or friends. 

Share the Information

  • Make copies and put them in every family members backpack or purse. Use technology such as the FEMA app to store the information on everyone's mobile devices.
  • Create a group list on your phone to effectively communicate with your family without having to text individual people. 
  • Use the internet as a back-up communication plan. If cell service is overloaded, you may be able to find WIFI and use social media platforms to mark yourself as safe, communicate with family members and receive important alerts and weather updates.
