Announcement
Thanks to all who attended the Bowie Youth Town Hall on April 21, 2022. A recording of the meeting can be found above. If you have questions about the work of the Youth Council, please contact Carolyn Fifer.
Bowie Youth Council Provides a New Perspective to City Leaders
The Bowie Youth Council provides an opportunity for local students to learn about local government and have a voice in city affairs. The Council consists of 11 City of Bowie students from grades 6 - 12, who have the opportunity to influence policy, provide positive leadership and service, and engage the community. Each of the four Bowie districts is represented on the Youth Council.
Two Youth Council advisors work with the students and guide the Youth Council. Advisors are appointed to two-year terms.
Both the student positions and the advisor positions are voluntary. No financial compensation is provided.
What is the Mission of the Youth Council?
The Bowie Youth Council has an important role in local government. All members work together to:
- Address policy matters affecting city youth (e.g. youth jobs, voter registration, etc.)
- Hold youth-based events
- Report to the City Council bi-monthly
- Attend City Council-appointed boards and committee meetings
- Raise issues of concern from their respective districts
What is the Time Commitment?
Youth Council members serve a one-year term. They attend monthly Youth Council meetings and are also asked to attend other City Council meetings as needed. Members are eligible to reapply annually if they meet member eligibility requirements.
Youth Council Application Process
The Youth Council was created by City Council action on September 8, 2020. Based on the inaugural year of the Youth Council and feedback from the original members, the Youth Council will begin its second year with a renewed direction and a revised structure. We anticipate resuming activities of the Youth Council in early 2023.
How do City of Bowie Boards, Councils, and Committees Operate?
The Youth Council is one of seventeen volunteer bodies that serve the City of Bowie. These groups are advisory to the City Council and are subject to the Rules for City Committees, Boards and Commissions.(R-16-01)
No financial compensation is provided to these bodies for their service.
