[ARCHIVED] Police Warn Residents to Beware of BGE Scam

Scam Alert

While not a new report to Bowie Police Department, our agency has recently been notified again of several individuals walking around neighborhoods claiming to be from BGE, setting up meetings with residents, entering their homes, even going so far as to change light bulbs for homeowners (swapping to LEDs.) City of Bowie ordinance requires all solicitors to have proper identification; if you did not schedule an appointment with an individual who suddenly arrives at your front door claiming to be from a certain company, do not let them into your home.

BGE representatives will never call you to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill. If you have concerns about the status of your account, call BGE's Customer Service line at 1-800-685-0123. Never open your door to someone you do not recognize. Ask for a photo ID through a window. All BGE employees and contractors carry company ID badges displaying their name, photograph and identification number.

To verify a BGE employee's identity or work being done, call us at 1- 800-685-0123. More information can be found here: https://www.bge.com/MyAccount/CustomerSupport/Pages/ImpostersAndScams.aspx
