[ARCHIVED] Opening Ceremony for Field of Honor

2023

The Stars and Stripes remind us of who we are as a people. They remind us that freedom is not free and that life is precious. Our flag also reminds us that America's strength comes from its unity-- a unity symbolized by the Stars and Stripes.

To honor those who serve our nation and those who have come before, Bowie has created a Field of Honor at Sussex Lane Park. This patriotic display of 150+ flags will be set up on May 26th and will remain until June 5th

Every Flag Tells a Story

Each flag may be accompanied by a dedication card. Residents, businesses, organizations, schools, houses of worship and others are invited to dedicate a flag in memory of an individual or group. Through their dedications, participants can

  • Honor a loved one who is, or was, a veteran or who serves in the military.
  • Honor a profession, such as medical providers or public safety officials who have helped us through the pandemic.
  • Honor an individual or group that provides support or assistance to the community.
  • Honor the memory of a person who lost their life in service to their country, to COVID or to other illness or tragedy.

When the Field of Honor is set up, we hope that as you drive by you will pause and remember the heroes and helpers honored there. Or better still, we encourage you to take some time to walk among the flags and read the dedication that will accompany each one.
