Bowie Launches Field of Honor for Heroes and Helpers

Community members can purchase a flag at the link and dedicate it to a person or group of their choosing

The Stars and Stripes remind us of who we are as a people. They remind us that freedom is not free. Life is precious and can be taken from us at any time for many reasons. Our flag also reminds us that America's strength comes from its unity-- a unity symbolized by the Stars and Stripes.

To honor heroes who have served, supported or made sacrifices for others in the past, or who are doing so now, the City of Bowie is organizing a display of United States flags to fly in a solemn formation at Sussex Lane Park. They will fly from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 28 (Memorial Day weekend) through Sunday, June 6

This display of 150 or more flags will be a patriotic tribute to Americans who have lost their lives in service to our country. The display will also honor active duty and retired military who have served our country, or others who have served in some way.

Each flag will tell a story

A dedication card will accompany each flag. Through their dedications, participants can:

  • Honor a loved one who is, or was, a veteran or who serves in the military.
  • Honor a profession, such as medical providers or public safety officials who have helped us through the pandemic.
  • Honor an individual or group that provides support or assistance to the community.
  • Honor the memory of a person who lost their life in service to their country, to COVID or to other illness or tragedy.

We hope that you will pause and remember the heroes and helpers honored there and take some time to walk among the flags and read the dedication accompanying each one.
