  1. Bowie Playhouse - "Amelie"

    August 23, 2019, 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM @ Bowie Playhouse

The musical opens with an introduction of young Amélie and her family. Amélie is born to a germaphobe father, Raphael, and neurotic mother, Amandine, and she feels isolated and emotionally distant from her parents. She takes solace in her telescope, which she uses to view the universe from afar. Her only contact with her parents comes in the form of a monthly health check-up from her father. One day, Amélie gets so excited to see him that her heart races and Raphael misdiagnoses her with a heart condition. Years pass, and Amélie becomes bored with her quiet life and distant father, and she decides to leave home. Life becomes very interesting then.

  3. Making Pretty Practical Pasteboard

    August 24, 2019, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM @ Belair Mansion

Mid-Victorian women enjoyed creating a variety of 'novelties' made from common items. These novelties could be practical, functional, and attractive. One of the most popular and common crafts was making objects from fabric covered pasteboard, including needle books, scissors cases, decorative boxes, work baskets, watch pockets, and many other items. Participants may choose from a variety of designs, sizes, and shapes taken from period publications and original artifacts. Minimal sewing skills are required - only a simple overcast stitch is used. All materials will be provided, including pasteboard and reproduction printed fabrics. Participants should bring a pair of sewing scissors to cut fabric and thread and a pair of utility scissors to cut pasteboard. Kit fee including workbook with patterns and instructions for all of the projects. Cost is $20. Reservations required. Space is limited. Minimum age is 15 years old. Call 301-809-3089

Come learn about some of our Green Bowie initiatives! Join the Bowie Lions Club and the City of Bowie Sustainability Planner at MOM's Organic Market for a rain barrel sale & CFL light bulb exchange! Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) contain mercury and should not be disposed of in your trash (the typical waste stream). You can dispose of them at this event and others offered by the City or bring them to your local Home Depot at any time. *Please note that this event is to encourage proper disposal of CFLs.
